In Haiti, it's not hard to find people who have been touched by HIV. Over 30,000 people died from the disease in 2002. The stories of those who survive draw a portrait of a country in turmoil- a mother in a rural countryside already overwhelmed by poverty and disease; sex workers who must decide every night whether to risk condom free sex; and HIV positive family members who still feel a lingering stigma. The prognosis for Haiti's response to the disease still remains elusive. Yet doctors firmly believe that the tide is turning on the AIDS battle in Haiti. We visit centers where community-based work, such as research and treatment, is carried out daily.

At first glance, Haitians may appear reserved, suspicious and serious. But, a simple "Hello" or nod of the head brings out the widest and most beautiful smiles one will ever see?.especially among children.	The mountains and shores of Haiti are breathtaking. This is why it feels so tragic to see environmental degradation, on littered streets, burned fields and dry mountainsides...one contributor to failing health and the spread of AIDS related illnesses. But this doesn't keep Haitians from enjoying whatever they can of this natural beauty. Here, an Albert Schweitzer hospital employee sits by the shore.	The daughter of a hospital worker shares a smile.
This is a satellite center for one of the hospitals. People who work at the centers live in one of these kinds of buildings, a far better alternative than what other people encounter outside the gates of this complex.	A common scene on Haiti's roads, scores of people trying to hitch a ride on an already over-packed vehicle to avoid having to walk for hours, a more common alternative for getting from point A to point B.	This picture of Laksmi's Singh, marks the moment when the producer first realized the contrast between Haiti's natural beauty and environmental decay. She says, "It was sad, but was the first real awareness of the complexity of this island."
